Ronk

At RONK Electrical Industries, our products are designed to enhance efficiency, stabilize power usage, and provide you with the peace of mind that your systems are operating reliably, day and night. Trust RONK to engineer innovative electrical solutions for rural and suburban infrastructure. We recognize the importance of every dollar and are committed to delivering robust and reliable equipment that stands the test of time.

Since 1950, RONK Electrical Industries has been a leading manufacturer of high-quality electrical products and equipment. Originally founded as Systems Analyzer Corporation in Nokomis, IL, RONK began developing phase converters for the agricultural industry. The name was soon changed to RONK Electrical Industries by LeRoy Ronk, who expanded its scope well beyond phase converters.

Today, RONK continues to operate exclusively in Nokomis, IL, where we manufacture an extensive range of products, including phase converters, power factor correction capacitors, stray voltage isolators, meter sockets with circuit breakers, double-throw switches (both metered and unmetered) transfer switches, docking stations, and outdoor equipment enclosures. Our market reach has grown beyond agriculture to serve various industries including oil and gas, water and wastewater, utilities and electrical co-ops, healthcare, government, HVAC, irrigation, and generator systems.

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety procedures are essential for protecting workers from hazardous energy during maintenance and servicing of machinery.

What is Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)?

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a safety practice used to ensure that dangerous machinery is properly shut off and cannot be restarted during maintenance or servicing. The primary goal of LOTO is to prevent the unexpected release of  hazardous energy, which can lead to serious injuries or fatalities. This practice is governed by OSHA regulations, specifically the Control of Hazardous  Energy (Lockout/Tagout) standard (29 CFR 1910.147).

Importance of LOTO

  • Prevents Injuries and Fatalities: Proper LOTO procedures can prevent an estimated 120 fatalities and 50,000 injuries annually in the workplace.
  • Compliance with Regulations: Adhering to LOTO standards is not only a  legal requirement but also a critical component of workplace safety. Non-compliance can result in significant fines and legal liabilities.
  • Enhances Equipment Lifespan: Implementing LOTO procedures can extend the life of machinery and reduce maintenance costs by preventing damage  during servicing.

Key Components of LOTO Procedures

  1. Preparation: Communicate with affected workers and gather necessary tools and equipment before starting maintenance.
  2. Shutdown: Follow manufacturer-specified procedures to power down the equipment safely.
  3. Isolation: Disconnect or separate all energy sources, including electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  4. Lockout: Apply lockout devices (e.g., padlocks) to energy-isolating devices to prevent accidental re-energization.
  5. Tagout: Use tagout devices (warning labels) to indicate that the equipment should not be operated.
  6. Verification: Ensure that the equipment is deenergized and cannot be started before beginning maintenance work.

Training and Compliance

Employers are required to train all employees on the purpose and use of LOTO procedures. This includes recognizing hazardous energy sources, understanding the types of energy present, and knowing how to apply and remove lockout/tagout devices safely. Regular reviews and updates of LOTO procedures are essential to maintain compliance and ensure worker safety.

By implementing effective Lockout/Tagout procedures, employers can significantly reduce the risk of workplace accidents and create a safer working environment for all employees. For more detailed guidance, refer to OSHA’s resources on LOTO safety.
